The History of the Royal Clifton
Hotel
|
| The first part of The Royal Clifton Hotel was constructed in 1854 and was granted a licence that was transferred from Southports first ever hotel run by the Sutton family.
|
| |
| Southport was started in 1792 by Mr William (the Duke) Sutton when he built a bathing house for summer visitors. He built the first permanent hotel in 1798.
|
|
| When this was demolished in 1854, his daughter, who was the first licensee of the Royal gained the licence. Over the years the Royal was extended substantially to its present size.

The Royal Hotel has always has a close association with the famous old golf courses of Birkdale, Ainsdale, Hillside and Hesketh and accommodated the American Ryder Cup team that played here in 1933 and 1937, as well as many of the famous players that competed in the "Open" whenever it was held at Birkdale, July 1983, 1991 and 1998, and no doubt again at the next "Open" at Birkdale in 2008..
In January 1977 The Royal amalgamated with The Clifton to form Southports largest hotel and only main hotel with views across the sea, west as far as Wales and North towards Blackpool and the Lake District.
In 1983 Tim Timmerman Managing Director of Mellors, Southports oldest (1840) bakers & caterers took over the hotel. He commenced a refurbishment programme still continuing to date creating a hotel with the best range of facilities in Southport. In 2003 he was joined by his son Mark a graduate from Surrey University Hotel & Catering faculty.
In 1987 the hotel joined The Best Western Group, an organisation that markets and joins independently owned hotels throughout the world creating the largest hotel chain.
It promotes the famous Southport Hotel throughout Britain, inviting National and International visitors to stay in the 111 bedrooms and suites.
